Yes. Nino had a great season but he is now a UFA while Geekie remains a player that Seattle holds the rights to. This wasn't about building the team that would score the most in one season, I am still factoring in what would help this team in the long term. |

Alright. I figured you could probably have flipped Nino for something better than what Geekie is, but I guess if you're taking Skinner you're going to have to watch the Cap a bit more too. |

I definitely wouldn’t have taken Skinner and Borgen is one the team is high on and hoping develops more.
I would also not take Quick. High contract and injury prone. Given Deidger was injured a lot too? A lot of money tied up and really worse than having him with Gru. Still the oddest moves of that draft with the goalies.
I think Id likely have kept Donskoi but redo one would be spend a bit of the cap and take Duchene over Jarnkrok.
Most of the guys that were questionable or had bad seasons got moved and team overall is set up to make an impact through the draft and going after ufa. Think its a given Francis mistead and mishandled the draft. Now its more about whats ahead after the inaugural season.

I really enjoyed reading this article and am looking forward to the rest of your assessments. I wish you wrote about the Jets. |

Sean, the only issue is that you're trying to draft a good, competitive team. Seattle was trying to put together a relatively cheap, cap floor lottery team while trying to strong-arm teams into including draft picks, which didn't work out. So you'd have to redraft based on that mindset. |

Agreed, but even with that in mind (and hindsight as well) it looks like Sean still agrees with about half of what Francis did. No matter what your expectations were for the expansion roster, it's hard to say that they really screwed it up. They simply didn't have the option available that Vegas did. |

Can't imagine Seattle was fond of Skinner's contract. - Reveen
Don’t think they’d take both Skinner and Eberle. I think they made the right choice. |

Vegas went all-in from the get go and (with a bit of luck) became an overnight contender...but with a short shelf life. Seattle is playing the long game. |

Because they didn’t have a choice. GM’s learned the hard way from the many mistakes made with Vegas. |

That and Ron Francis did the same thing in Carolina and did the slow build. |

Ron Francis was brilliant at the beginning but if he were in Raleigh today they probably still haven't made the playoffs and he's probably still building.

Carson Soucy. Interesting D right here, Kid has potential and in the right situation he can he a big nasty 2nd line pairing. Gotta feed him nails in the morning. Would love the Bruins to try to trade for him |

And if Henrique HAD been the selection, chances are he wouldn't have produced similar numbers. Furthermore, with his salary & status, Henrique likely would have pushed someone like McCann further down the lineup and Seattle wouldn't have seen how good he can be in a top-6 role.
33 goals or not, Skinner's price-tag would be a multi-year albatross. Borgen was a great pick.
In a re-draft, I think Zadorov should have been the choice from Chicago. Hawks traded him a week after the Expansion Draft for a 3rd Round Pick.
While I, like everyone else, agree that MacDermid was a horrible selection . . . I think players like Clague, Lizotte, Wagner, or even Athanasiou, Grundstrom, Lemieux should have been considered over Quick.

Not getting dealt. Team loves him. He got better as the year went in and with both Gio and Lauzon gone he is locked into the top four going forward unless he falls on his face. Even then the lack of depth atm will mean Francis is in no hurry at all to move him out. |

Looks like Francis is active. Was in on but missed out on Fiala. While Kings beat them out word is they may be looking into Debrincat out of Chicago. Cost likely in the three asset range but Kraken do have that ability with a plethora of picks. Have to think Hawks would want one of the top prospects, maybe Winterton coming off a solid Mem Cup. Which leaves a roster spot player.

Things bound to pick up with the draft days away now. The Dibrincat rumour and another today with possibility of being at least able to afford adding Kadri, even though I do NOT want him at all, especially overpriced.
Seattle has plenty of picks and cap space this could be Francis' best chance to remake this team for the coming season. |
